As the old song goes, “there’s no place like home for the holidays.” This year, those heartfelt lyrics have added significance. Between the coronavirus pandemic and the isolation as a result of safe social distancing, Christmas is going to be a much quieter one spent at home and if we’re lucky, with the people who are closest to us.
As a real estate agent, I know how important home can be during the holidays. This year has certainly heightened my appreciation of the true value of a beautiful home; the safety it provides, the memories it stores, the feelings of joy and togetherness it can hold. This year, more than ever before, I am reminded that Christmas isn’t about the presents; it’s about the feeling.
So how do we create that feeling when things feel so different and out of our control?
First, I remind myself that it’s temporary and I refocus on what is good in my life. I work to ensure I am in the moment and enjoying them as they come along. For example, my 2 ½ year old has figured out that there are fun toys inside the wrapped boxes this year! More than once I’ve heard ripping paper in the background and excited squeals only to find Mahki has taken a gift to his bedroom to open. We’ve since put his gifts out of reach, but I know Christmas morning is going to be SO MUCH FUN because he’s going to lose his ever-loving mind over all the toys.
Second, I remind myself that this is the season of giving. Some people may be struggling after having lost their job, dealing with illness, or simply having to celebrate Christmas alone. We’ve made handcrafted ornaments and delivered them to our elderly neighbors (while still socially distancing), donated food to our local pantries, etc.. I am a firm believer that we can impact our communities and those around us by being thoughtful and caring.
Finally, we’re going to make new traditions. Normally we’d fly to Denver to visit my side of the family. My sister throws a Christmas Eve party every year and we eat green chili and tamales (she says she has tamales so “everyone has something to open for Christmas”). It’s tradition. This year, I’m going to host a Christmas Craft zoom party for all my nieces and nephews.
How will you create the feeling of Christmas this year? What might you do to create joy for those around you? How can you create memories in your home that are warm, happy, and last?
